Winter 2026–2027 brings specific considerations for Surrey BC licensed childcare families — from holiday closure schedules and fee policies to cold/flu season sick-day planning and the particular challenges of dark, wet Surrey winters on children’s outdoor play. This guide covers Surrey BC licensed childcare in winter 2026–2027.
Holiday Closures and Fee Policies: Winter 2026–2027 in Surrey BC
Winter 2026–2027 BC statutory holidays include: Christmas Day (December 25, 2026), Boxing Day (December 26, 2026), New Year’s Day (January 1, 2027), and Family Day (February 15, 2027). Most Surrey BC licensed childcare centres also close for additional days between Christmas and New Year’s — typically December 27–31, 2026. Confirm your specific centre’s closure dates well in advance. Fee policy during the holiday closure period varies: many centres continue to charge monthly fees without pro-rating for closure days; some charge only for days the centre is open. Review your enrollment contract carefully. See our contract guide.
Cold and Flu Season: Sick Days in Surrey BC Childcare Winter 2026–2027
November through February is peak cold and flu season in Surrey BC licensed childcare settings. Children in group care are exposed to more respiratory viruses than home-care children — a normal and expected part of building the immune system, but challenging for working families. Plan ahead: build a sick-day backup plan before December (grandparent, trusted neighbor, emergency care arrangement); stock your sick-day supplies; and review your centre’s illness exclusion policy. Most Surrey BC licensed centres require exclusion for fever over 38°C, vomiting, diarrhea, or contagious illness symptoms. See our sick days guide and infection control guide.
Outdoor Play in Surrey BC Winter Childcare
Surrey BC winters are wet and grey — and quality licensed childcare centres go outside anyway. MCFD licensing supports daily outdoor play regardless of weather (with appropriate clothing and shelter). Quality centres follow the “there is no bad weather, only bad clothing” principle and ensure children have waterproof boots, rain pants, and jackets for daily outdoor play throughout winter. Ask any Surrey BC centre on your tour about their wet-weather outdoor play policy. Dress your child for rain every day from October through March. See our outdoor play guide.
