Surrey BC Licensed Childcare Contracts: What to Read Before You Sign

Surrey BC licensed childcare contracts — the written agreement between a licensed centre and a family at enrollment — are one of the most underread documents in the entire childcare process. Most Surrey BC parents sign the contract at enrollment without reading it carefully. This guide explains what Surrey BC licensed childcare contracts typically contain, what to watch for, and what questions to ask before signing.

Why Childcare Contracts Matter

A licensed childcare contract is a legally binding agreement. Its terms govern: what fees you pay and when; what notice is required to withdraw your child; what happens to fees during closures (statutory holidays, illness outbreaks, building closures); what the centre’s sick-child exclusion policy is; what happens if your child is repeatedly excluded; what authorization you are giving for photos, outings, field trips, and emergency medical treatment; and how disputes are resolved. Reading the contract before signing is not optional — it is your legal protection as a family.

Key Clauses in Surrey BC Licensed Childcare Contracts

1. Fee structure and licensed childcare terms: The contract should specify the full fee, the licensed childcare subsidy applied, and the net fee to you. If the centre is MCFD-licensed, confirm this is documented in the contract and that the subsidized rate is specified clearly. See our licensed childcare guide.

2. Withdrawal notice period: Most Surrey BC licensed centres require 2–4 weeks written notice to withdraw your child. Some require a full month. This means if you withdraw with less notice, you may owe fees for the notice period even if your child doesn’t attend. Understand this clause fully before signing.

3. Statutory holiday and closure fees: Does the centre charge fees for the 12 BC statutory holidays and any additional closure days? Many centres do — you pay for the spot, not just days attended. This is standard practice. Calculate annual closure days: 12 statutory holidays + typically 2–5 additional closure days = 14–17 non-attendance days you may still pay for.

4. Sick-day exclusion policy: How many sick-day absences are allowed? Do you still pay fees when your child is home sick? (Yes — in almost all licensed centre contracts, fees continue regardless of attendance.)

5. Photo and media consent: Does the centre post photos of your child on social media or in marketing materials? This consent clause is typically included in contracts. Understand what you are consenting to. You may be able to opt out of specific uses.

6. Emergency medical treatment authorization: Standard childcare contracts include authorization for the centre to consent to emergency medical treatment if a parent cannot be reached. This is appropriate and standard — but read what is included.

7. Deposit terms: Many Surrey BC centres require a deposit (1–2 weeks fees) at enrollment. The contract should specify: is this deposit refundable? When and under what conditions? See our deposits and fees guide.

Questions to Ask Before Signing

Before signing any Surrey BC licensed childcare contract: Can I have a copy to review before the enrollment meeting? What is your process for fee increases — how much notice do you give? What happens to my deposit if I withdraw during settling-in? What is your process if you need to terminate the enrollment agreement? Has this contract been reviewed recently for BC Consumer Protection Act compliance?
