How to Verify MCFD Childcare Licence in Surrey BC — Step-by-Step Guide | Mini Minds

Every MCFD-licensed childcare centre in Surrey BC is required to display its current licence at the facility. But as a parent, you can also verify MCFD licence status independently — before your first tour, and at any point during enrollment. This guide shows Surrey BC families how to verify any licensed childcare centre’s status in 2026.

Why Verifying MCFD Licence Status Matters

Not all providers claiming to be “licensed” have a current, clean MCFD licence. A childcare centre can: have a current licence but with conditions attached; have had its licence suspended or cancelled; be operating without a licence (illegal in BC for group care of 3+ unrelated children); or be licensed for one age group but not another. Verifying independently protects your child — and confirms you are evaluating apples-to-apples across your shortlist.

Step 1: Search the BC Community Care Facilities Registry

The BC Community Care Facilities Registry (CCFR) is the official government database of all MCFD-licensed facilities in BC. To search: Go to gov.bc.ca and search “Community Care Facilities Registry” — or search directly for “BC CCFR childcare”. Enter the facility name or address. The registry shows: current licence status (active/suspended/cancelled); the licence category (Group Child Care Under 36 Months, Group Child Care 30 Months to School Age, Family Child Care, etc.); maximum approved capacity; and the most recent inspection date and outcome.

Step 2: Request the Licence at Your Tour

At every childcare tour, ask to see the physical MCFD licence. MCFD requires licensed centres to post their licence in a visible location. The licence states: the legal name of the operator; the facility address; the licence category and maximum capacity; and the expiry date. A reputable centre will produce the licence immediately and without hesitation. If a centre is reluctant, evasive, or cannot find the licence — treat that as a significant red flag. Mini Minds Childcare displays our current MCFD licence at the facility and provides it on request at any tour.

Step 3: Check for Inspection Reports

MCFD inspects licensed childcare centres at least annually (often more frequently for new centres or those with compliance issues). Inspection reports are public — accessible through the BC CCFR. When reviewing inspection reports: look for the most recent report date; review any “non-compliances” (areas where the centre did not meet standards at the time of inspection); and check whether non-compliances were corrected (the report will note if a follow-up inspection confirmed correction). Some non-compliances are minor (labelling, documentation) — others are serious (ratio violations, safety hazards). Ask the centre director to explain any non-compliances you see in recent reports.
