Surrey BC parents of young children know that playgrounds are where some of the most important early childhood development happens — physical confidence, social negotiation, risk assessment, and joy. This guide covers Surrey BC’s best playgrounds near licensed childcare, and what playground time means for child development.
Why Playground Time Matters for Young Children
Research consistently shows that unstructured outdoor play — including playground time — develops physical literacy, gross motor skills, risk assessment ability, social negotiation skills, and emotional regulation. Playground time at and near licensed childcare centres supplements the centre’s outdoor program and provides additional active play opportunities. Surrey BC’s urban playground network includes parks within walking distance of many Newton licensed childcare facilities.

Playground Outings as Part of Licensed Childcare Programming
Quality licensed childcare integrates community playground visits into programming — typically for preschool-age children who can safely travel in small groups. Community walks and playground visits expose children to the broader neighbourhood, develop community belonging, and provide gross motor variety beyond the centre’s own outdoor space. Ask any Surrey BC centre on your tour how frequently they take community outings and where they typically go. See our outdoor play guide.
