Surrey BC has a growing Iranian and Persian community — part of Metro Vancouver’s large Persian population concentrated across the Lower Mainland. Persian-speaking (Farsi-speaking) families in Surrey BC have specific cultural and linguistic considerations when choosing licensed childcare. This guide addresses Iranian/Persian families and licensed childcare in Surrey BC.
Persian/Farsi-Speaking Families and Surrey BC Licensed Childcare
Persian (Farsi) is spoken by Iranian families and by Dari-speaking Afghan families — both significant communities in Metro Vancouver and Surrey BC. Persian-speaking families navigating Surrey BC licensed childcare may look for: Farsi-speaking educators (present in some Surrey BC centres, particularly those in communities with larger Persian populations); Farsi-language settlement support through MOSAIC, DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society, and other Surrey BC settlement organizations; and licensed childcare eligibility for permanent residents and some temporary residents. See our non-English speaking families guide.
Iranian Cultural Values and Licensed Childcare in Surrey BC
Iranian families in Surrey BC often bring high educational expectations for their children — a cultural value that BC’s play-based ECE philosophy may initially seem to underserve. The research is consistent: play-based learning outperforms academic drilling for long-term learning outcomes. Iranian families who understand this often become strong advocates for play-based ECE. Nowruz (Persian New Year, March 20–21) and Yalda Night (winter solstice celebration) are important cultural celebrations — quality centres that acknowledge these celebrate the richness of their enrolled community. See our cultural fit guide.
