Gardening, growing food, and simple cooking activities are among the richest developmental experiences quality Surrey BC licensed childcare centres can offer — and they encompass literacy, numeracy, science, fine motor, nutrition education, and connection to nature all at once. This guide covers gardening and cooking programs in Surrey BC licensed childcare.
Why Gardening and Cooking Belong in Surrey BC Licensed Childcare
Gardening and cooking at Surrey BC licensed childcare centres provide: science literacy through direct observation (seeds germinate, plants grow, water evaporates); math through measurement (teaspoons, cups, weighing); sensory exploration through soil, texture, smell, and taste; fine motor development through digging, pouring, stirring, and cutting; language development through rich vocabulary (germinate, sprout, harvest, simmer); nutrition literacy (children who grow and prepare food eat more adventurously); and cultural connection (growing foods from families’ heritage cultures). See our early numeracy guide and outdoor play guide.
What Gardening Programs Look Like at Surrey BC Licensed Centres
Gardening programs at Surrey BC licensed childcare centres vary in scope: small indoor planting projects (bean sprouts in cups, herb pots); raised outdoor garden beds where children grow seasonal vegetables; and more extensive food gardens with composting and harvest celebrations. Any outdoor space — even a balcony or patio — can support child gardening. Ask any Surrey BC centre on your tour: do children have access to a garden or planting area? What have children grown recently? The enthusiasm and specificity of the answer tells you much about the program’s investment in nature and science programming. See our nature-based guide.
