One of the first decisions Surrey parents face when looking for licensed childcare in Surrey BC is whether to enroll full-time or part-time. Both options have genuine advantages depending on your family’s work schedule, your child’s temperament, and your budget. Here’s a practical breakdown to help you decide.
What Is Full-Day Childcare in Surrey BC?
Full-day childcare in Surrey typically means care for the entire working day — usually 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM at licensed facilities. At Mini Minds Childcare, our licensed programs run Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, giving families the full-day coverage most working parents need.
Best for: Parents working full-time, families where both parents work standard hours, families who want consistent routine for their child.
What Is Part-Day Childcare in Surrey BC?
Part-day childcare in Surrey may involve mornings only, afternoons only, or 3–4 days per week depending on the provider. Some licensed centres offer flexible scheduling; others require fixed days.
Best for: Parents who work part-time, families with a stay-at-home parent who wants some dedicated time, children who need a gentler introduction to group care.
Full-Day Childcare Surrey: Pros and Cons

- ✅ Full-day coverage for working parents without gaps
- ✅ More socialization time with peers
- ✅ Deeper relationships with educators over longer days
- ❌ Higher monthly cost than part-day options
- ❌ May be too much time away from home for very young infants
Part-Day Childcare Surrey: Pros and Cons
- ✅ Lower monthly cost
- ✅ Gentler introduction to group care for anxious children
- ✅ Allows parent and child more home time together
- ❌ May not cover full working hours for employed parents
- ❌ Less consistency in routine can slow development
- ❌ Fewer spaces available — most Surrey licensed daycares prioritize full-time spots
How licensed childcare Changes the Cost Equation
BC’s licensed childcare program dramatically reduces the cost difference between full-day and part-day care. When full-day licensed childcare at a MCFD-licensed Surrey facility costs as little as licensed care rates, the monthly cost difference between full-time and part-time becomes much less significant for most families. Many Surrey parents who initially planned to use part-time care find that licensed childcare-reduced full-day fees make full-time care more affordable than expected.
What About Infants? Full-Day vs. Part-Day Infant Care in Surrey
For very young infants (under 6 months), many parents prefer a gradual introduction to childcare — starting with shorter days and building to full-day care. Our infant care program in Newton, Surrey is designed to support this kind of gradual transition. Speak to our team about what this looks like in practice.
Developmental Perspective: What the Research Says
Research on the effects of childcare hours on child development is clear on one key point: quality matters more than quantity. A child in full-day, high-quality licensed care with ECE-certified educators develops well. A child in part-day, lower-quality care may not. When choosing between full-day and part-day options in Surrey, prioritize the quality of the care above all else. See our guide on how to choose a licensed daycare in Surrey BC.
Our Recommendation for Surrey Families
For most Surrey families with working parents, full-day licensed childcare at a MCFD-licensed facility provides the best combination of coverage, consistency, developmental support, and value. For families with more flexibility, a discussion with your prospective childcare provider about available scheduling options is always worthwhile.
