Attachment Theory and Licensed Childcare in Surrey BC: What the Research Actually Says

Attachment theory — the psychological framework that explains how humans form close emotional bonds — is one of the most practically relevant bodies of research for parents choosing licensed childcare. Many Surrey BC parents wonder: does daycare harm my child’s attachment to me? This guide addresses attachment theory, what the research actually says about licensed childcare and attachment, and what quality Surrey BC childcare does to support healthy attachment.

What Attachment Theory Says

Bowlby and Ainsworth’s foundational attachment research established that secure attachment to a primary caregiver in infancy is the foundation of healthy emotional and social development. A securely attached infant uses the caregiver as a “safe base” from which to explore — returning to the caregiver when distressed and calming quickly when the caregiver responds warmly and consistently. The quality of attachment is determined primarily by the caregiver’s responsiveness, not by the quantity of time together. A parent who is present and responsive for 8 hours/day develops secure attachment. A parent who is present 24/7 but emotionally unavailable does not.

Does Licensed Childcare Harm Attachment?

The short answer: No — when the childcare is quality-licensed care started at an appropriate age with a warm settling-in period. The NICHD Study of Early Child Care (the largest longitudinal study of childcare and child development ever conducted) found: maternal sensitivity and responsiveness is the primary predictor of secure attachment — not whether the child attends childcare; children in quality licensed care show no significant difference in maternal attachment security compared to children in exclusive parental care; the quality of the childcare environment does affect child outcomes — poor quality childcare adds stress; and starting childcare before 4–6 months in full-time arrangements adds some risk for some children — particularly when paired with low maternal sensitivity. The conclusion: quality matters far more than whether childcare is used.

Secondary Attachment at Licensed Childcare

Children who attend quality licensed childcare typically form secondary attachment bonds with their primary ECE educator — using the educator as a secondary safe base during care hours. This is healthy and appropriate. It does NOT compete with or diminish the child’s primary attachment to parents. Secondary attachments with non-parental caregivers are a normal feature of human development across all cultures with non-nuclear-family childcare traditions. See our settling-in guide.
